KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is not paying any heed on the repairing work of four out of nine Rescue Services ‘1122’ ambulances which are lying faulty at Civic Center Building for last three years, it has learnt here.
It is pertinent to mention here that those Mercedes Brand Rescue ambulances were purchased at the cost of Rs20.5 million in the tenure of former City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal in the year 2008, in order to ensure relief in time of any disaster, each costing Rs2.8 million.
Sources told Pakistan State Times that the four Rescue ‘1122’ ambulances became out of order during the transportation of floods victims in the year 2010, as the authorities concerned paid no attention towards the maintenance of these ambulances resulting in the wreckage of these ambulances.
The sources further added the repairing cost of each ambulance is Rs 0.6 million which make the total sum for the repairing of four ambulances to Rs 2.4 millions.
The sources in KMC Health Department said that the officials concerned were of the view that the lack of funds could not allow the repairing work of defunct ambulances for last 3 years.
When contacted, Administrator KMC Muhammad Hussain Syed, in this regard, he was not available for his comments.
It may be mentioned here that only five Rescue ‘1122’ ambulances for the population of around 20 million are working in the city which certainly a matter of concern.
